What Does Vitamin B12 Do in the Body?
Vitamin B12 is an essential water-soluble vitamin with four jobs: building red blood cells, insulating nerves, copying DNA, and converting food into energy. It's also the one vitamin your body can't make and no plant can give you. So where does it come from, and what exactly is it doing in there?

Vitamin B12 enables red blood cell formation, maintains the myelin sheath that insulates your nerves, supports DNA synthesis in every dividing cell, and helps convert fats and proteins into cellular energy. Every known symptom of B12 deficiency — fatigue, tingling, brain fog, hair changes — traces back to one of these four jobs.

Meet the molecule
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin also known as cobalamin, named for the cobalt atom seated at its center. Its formula — C₆₃H₈₈CoN₁₄O₁₄P — makes it the largest and most complex vitamin known, and the only one built around a metal ion.
