Does Ashwagandha Increase Testosterone? An Honest Look
Ashwagandha appears in a great many products marketed as testosterone boosters, and there is real research behind that positioning. There's also a considerable gap between what the studies found and what the labels imply.
Here's what the trials actually measured, which men they involved, and what a realistic expectation looks like.
The short answer
Some studies have found modest testosterone increases with ashwagandha — but almost entirely in specific populations: stressed men, men with fertility concerns, or men starting resistance training. There's little evidence it raises testosterone meaningfully in healthy, unstressed men with normal levels. It's better understood as a stress supplement with a downstream hormonal effect than as a testosterone booster.
What the studies actually found
Several trials have measured testosterone as an outcome, and the pattern across them is consistent and specific.
Studies in men with chronic stress have reported modest testosterone increases alongside the cortisol reductions ashwagandha is better known for. Trials in men with fertility concerns have found improvements in semen parameters and hormone measures. And studies pairing ashwagandha with a resistance training programme have reported small increases in testosterone alongside strength gains.
Notice what those three populations share: none of them is a healthy, well-rested man with normal testosterone who just wants more of it. That's the group the marketing addresses and the group the research largely doesn't.
Why stress is the likely mechanism
The explanation that fits best isn't a direct hormonal one.
Chronic stress and elevated cortisol are associated with suppressed testosterone — the body deprioritizes reproductive function under sustained threat. If ashwagandha reduces cortisol, as the stress research supports, then some recovery of testosterone toward normal is a plausible downstream consequence.

How big are the increases?
Modest, and worth putting in context.
The percentage changes reported in trials sound reasonable in isolation, and they're a fraction of what medical testosterone therapy produces. They're also measured from baselines that were often suppressed by stress in the first place.
What they don't represent is pushing a normal man into a higher-than-normal range. That isn't what the studies show, and it isn't how the mechanism would work.
Set expectations accordingly: this is a supplement that may help restore something stress took, not one that adds beyond your normal.
If you think your testosterone is low

There's a plausible indirect route too: better sleep and lower stress support recovery, and recovery is what allows consistent training. That's a chain of small effects rather than an anabolic one.
What to expect if you take it
Realistically, the things ashwagandha does best are the things you'll notice first — feeling less wound up, sleeping better, handling a demanding week with more capacity.
Hormonal changes, where they occur, are gradual and not something you'll perceive directly. Studies ran eight to twelve weeks, and any testosterone effect would build across that window rather than announcing itself.

The framing that matters: these were studies in men already experiencing difficulty, conducted in a clinical context. That's promising research rather than a reason to self-manage.

- Managing chronic stress. Where ashwagandha legitimately contributes.
